The Typhoon & The Boatmaker

This is a short documentary about an individual who experienced the typhoon Yolanda right infront of his eyes. While almost everyone took shelter during the storm, Rolando Albacite, the boatmaker, went out with his sons trying to secure his boats. This is a portrait of a brave and grounded man who stayed humble despite the losses of the enormous calamity.

A Parent’s Musings on their Third Culture Kids

“Where do you come from?”

For others this question is easy to answer but for Third Culture Kids, this is the main question that leaves them grappling for answers. Where to start? Where was I born? Where did I grow up? Where am I living now?

Global nomads, cultural chameleons, living in between worlds, these are some of the names that Third Culture Kids (TCK) are tagged with. Ted Ward, a sociologist, even named them the prototype citizens of the future. With migration being a global phenomena and creating a borderless world, for TCKs and their families, where one was conceived, grew up or currently living become just a list of places stamped on their passports.

Ancient chicken DNA reveals Philippines home to Polynesians

Sa isang naunang post ay nabanggit namin ang pagkakalapit ng ating wika sa mga wika ng Polynesians. Ilang halimbawa: mata (mata), langit (te rangi), isa (ta, tasi), dalawa (ua, lua, rua), tatlo (tolu, toi), ina (tina, sina, tinaa), ama (tama, tamaa), anay (ane), kuto (utu, kutu), bato (vatu, fatu, kohatu), isda (ika), pain (paa, fish lure), inum (inu), babae (wahine), apoy (ahi).

Ngayon po ay naglabas ang isang pamantasan sa Australia ng findings na ang mga manok ng Polynesians ay nagmula pala sa Pilipinas, dala-dala ng mga ninuno natin. The study used DNA/genetic signatures to trace the dispersal of chickens, one of the animals brought along by ancient people as they migrated island to island in this part of the world.

Aalamin po namin kung may adobo rin sa Polynesian islands...

Marahil napansin na po ninyo dito sa Singapore na maraming salita sa Malaysia at Indonesia na pareho sa mga salita natin sa Pilipinas, tulad ng anak (anak), hangin (angin), kambing (kambing), mata (mata), sayang (sayang), dating (datang), bato (batu), sakit (penyakit), takot (takut). Mayroon ding magkahawig, tulad ng pagbilang, bigas (beras), inom (minum), apoy (api), isda (ikan), daan (jalan), kuripot (kedekut), daliri (jari), kahoy (kayu), nguya (menguyah), dila (lidah) at iba pa. Mayroon magkalapit ang ibig sabihin, tulad ng halimaw (harimau o tigre), kamay (tangan), hita (paha), at gatas (...alam na po ninyo).

Ngunit magugulat po kayo na kahit sa Polynesian islands ay maraming salita na halos pareho sa atin: langit (te rangi), isda (ika), mata (mata), inum (inu), babae (wahine), apoy (ahi), bato (kohatu), luha (haea). Sa katunayan, ang word order ng Tagalog at Maori (isa sa mga Polynesian languages) ay iisa: verb-subject-object, halimbawa ay "ibibigay ko ito."

Ito ay nangangahulugan na ang mga ninuno natin ay malayo ang nararating, gamit ang kanilang sasakyang pandagat. Bago pa dumating ang mga taga-Europa, malawak na ang pagbaybay ng mga Malay at Austronesian.

Hindi po ninyo siguro alam na umabot sila ng Africa, kung saan maraming lugar na tumutugtog din ng kulintang (xylophone), pati na sa Madagascar (ang isla malapit sa Africa na pinasikat ng isang animated film). Sa kabilang direksyon naman, papuntang silangan/east, nakarating sila sa Easter Island, lagpas pa ng Polynesian Islands at malapit na sa Chile (na kilala sa malalaking statues).

Ang kultura ng mga Malay, na isang maritime civilization, ay angkop sa maraming isla sa ating panig ng daigdig. At bago pa napadpad o naligaw dito sina Magellan, malawak na ang pakikipag-ugnayan natin sa iba't ibang kultura, maging mga taong galing sa sinaunang Tsina, o sa mga Indian, Arabo, at Persian.

Hindi rin po nakakapagtaka na ang mga Pilipino ngayon ay sanay na sanay sa ibang bansa, at madaling mag-adjust kahit saang panig ng daigdig. Hindi po sagabal ang dagat sa atin; ito po para sa ating mga ninuno ay daan, at daanan.
